The Geneseo Farmers’ Market brings farmers and local businesses into the community every Thursday on Center Street.

There is an abundance of fresh produce, from peaches, sweet corn, berries, to green beans, peppers, garlic, and more.

There are also local businesses promoting and selling goods – such as Nicole McKinney and her new business, Pawsome Treatery, where she makes all-natural dog treats.

After starting her business in April, McKinney began going to different markets and events to get her name out there.

She lives in Geneseo and attends farmers markets in Henrietta, Geneseo, and Lima. She recently attended the Avon Corn Festival.

“I’m here not just to sell but to tell people about it,” said McKinney.

McKinney said that she often sees repeat customers at the farmers markets and knows that her attendance is helpful.

McKinney said that she enjoys seeing local people and getting her business out in different places. She feels that local people are often the ones attending and supporting small markets and she wants to target that local community.

“They’ll be the ones coming back,” said McKinney.

Among other small businesses that attend the Geneseo Farmers’ Market is Three Falls Cider, a hard cider company that opened in Castile this past spring.

Farmers of all varieties gather at the Geneseo Farmers’ Market from fresh produce to fresh flowers.

Sue Randall of Gainesville has been attending the Geneseo Farmers’ Market since it began in 2011 and offers a variety of herbs, succulents, perennials, annuals, and even bouquets of fresh flowers.

Randall enjoys seeing the college kids each year and enjoys chatting with the other vendors at the market.

She said that the Geneseo Farmers’ Market and other markets like it help a lot with local recognition and sales for vendors.

Sam Bellavia runs the stand for Sweet Arts Bakery. He said that it is the bakery’s first year at the market and many people have told her that they didn’t even realize that the bakery is on Main Street.

Attending the market helps to get their name out there, according to Bellavia.

The Free Soil Farm, local to the Hartford House in Geneseo, is also in attendance at the market.

The farm was founded in 2009 by Corrin Strong and brings produce grown on the grounds of the Hartford House, farmed without any chemical herbicides or pesticides.

One of the foods that the farm sells at the market that is unique is their ground cherries. The cherries grow from July to September and often taste different for each person according to Brittany Hart, who often runs the stand.

“I had someone tell me it tasted like Captain Crunch once,” said Hart with a laugh.

Her favorite thing about the market is being able to see people in the community.

The Geneseo Farmers Market takes place from 3 to 6:30 p.m. every Thursday at Main and Center Street. The market, which opened June 21, continues to Oct. 18 this year.
